I stopped in here the other night with my parents while visiting Grand Rapids. They had recently begun going to El Burrito Loco and recommended it as better-tasting and less-crowded than some other Mexican restaurants in GR. Among the three of us, we each ordered a Burrito Real -- one with beef tips, two with chicken (all about $8.95 each). The food was delivered hot within about 5-7 minutes, it seemed. Overall, the dish was tasty, but I was hoping for a little more spice to it. There were peppers in the burrito, but perhaps it was the salsa that made it taste so tame. The rice and beans were delicious and were an appropriate portion size -- even though it seemed like less than other places, we each waddled out the door feeling utterly stuffed with food. Perks: the complimentary chips and salsa make for a tasty appetizer; outdoor seating is available; HUGE menu. To note: They accept credit cards but not American Express. Overall, it was a good meal with fast service. I'd just like to see the place do more to differentiate itself from other restaurants in town.

awesome "authentic" mexican food. the burritos are amazing. the chips are good and so is the salsa but it isn't spicy so you'll need to add in some hot cause if thats your thing

I usually end up at Burrito Loco at least once whenever I take a trip to GR. It's good, solid Mexican food, and the large portions are quite welcome when I've just been starved for hours on a delayed flight.

Eh. I'm so disappointed in El Burrito. The reviews have been mixed here amongst Yelpers, so I'm not sure why my expectations were so high. I was SO underwhelmed due to how bland all of the food was. The most mild salsa ever (which I understand to some is not a bad thing.) I've had jarred salsas 10 x better. Asked for queso to accompany the chips/salsa and never did receive it. Enchilada Trio (Cheese/Bean/Chicken)-- very bland. Chicken has no real flavor, no zip or spices at all (and I'm not talking about heat.) Rice tastes like boxed rice-a-roni. Guac was very runny and a very fake-green color :-/ Overall this food wasn't horrible but it was flavorless and nothing I couldn't make at home. Overpriced dinner menu for the quality- in my opinion. Won't come back. Very nice atmosphere though/decor is nice. Nice bathrooms. Food doesn't measure up to any of this unfortunately.

Awesome Salsa and Chips. Big super cold beers. Food was great, go for ameri/mex or authentic whichever you prefer. Servings were big and yummy. The best kid friendly mexican restaurant in Grand Rapids.

Started going regularly on Thursday nights and splitting Fajitas with my fiance' and diving into their 18oz 5 dollar margarita special. Yum yum.

We've been to El Burrito three or four times now. I can't say that it's truly authentic, but it is certainly more authentic than many "Mexican" restaurants in Grand Rapids. True Mexican food is not smothered in cheese. They do have quite a few dishes you won't find at any other Mexican restaurant in town. Lengua, anyone? Anyway, our most recent visit was on a Monday evening. We had a group of eight, and the restaurant wasn't very busy (normal for a Monday at most restaurants, I'd imagine). I'll say up front that the waitress was prompt bringing the menus, drinks, and food. However, she was so unpersonable that I'd swear she was a robot. She wasn't rude, exactly, but didn't smile or show any facial expression at all. When my BIL asked her if the beans were vegetarian, she gave him a blank stare and shrugged. She only went to inquire after he asked if she could please find out (they are made with "vegetable" oil). The chips were...eh. Chips...but they were warm. The salsa was okay -- we asked for "hot" and it did have a nice bite. The menu is HUGE. They had a section of the menu that was labeled as vegetarian, and it had about five choices on it. Everyone was pleased with his or her food. I ordered vegetable fajitas, and they came with a variety of vegetables, including cauliflower and carrots, which was nice. You don't normally see cauliflower at restaurants, even in their "salads" (in quotes because as far as I'm concerned, a salad is not a few leaves of iceberg lettuce, an anemic slice of tomato, and 2 paper thin slices of cucumber, drowning in dressing...but I digress). It had definitely been cooked in too much oil, as the vegetables were totally shiny, and there was a slick of oil on the bottom of it. They were tasty, though very salty, IMO. I got three flour tortillas, and big helping each of guacamole, sour cream, lettuce, beans, and rice. The portion was large enough that I ate about 1/3 of it, and had two more meals from the leftovers. I don't remember exactly what the others at our table ordered. There were beef fajitas, and a burrito as big as my head -- both of which the eaters liked a lot. My SIL and BIL ordered sopapillas for dessert. I tasted one and it didn't bear much resemblance to the sopapillas I ate in Texas. It was too greasy and fried tasting, rather than pillowy and light. It had chocolate drizzled on it too. Ew. I'd definitely go again. We didn't realize they had closed at 9pm, but they didn't ask us to leave, though we didn't stand up til 9:20pm. It was a nice visit other than the robotic waitress, and the food was plentiful and tasty.

What is this white, tasteless, gummy substance on top of everything? It coats your mouth like Pepto-Bismol, but without that delicious Pepto-Bismol taste. Saying that stuff is "queso blanco" is like saying you are the king of the known universe...it's a lie, but kind of a funny one. Well, funny until you realize you shouldn't make any plans afterward that involve you being more than 30 paces from your toilet. Not a "date night" place. Don't get your hopes up, and you'll be fine. Order something simple. The relatively inexpensive bill and a cold Dos Equis may ease the discomfort you will feel later on. A bit.

Ate there yesterday night. Ordered Pollo Toluca but that came burnt. When we mentioned that to the server and subsequently the manager, the response was just "Ok". I ordered the fiesta fajita which gave me tummy ache and loose motions overnight. We will never go here again.

Went there last night with another couple. Chips and salsa were great! I wanted a lime daiquiri but the waitress said they can't make lime flavored daiquiris, only margaritas. Isn't it the same thing with rum instead of tequila? The margarita was the strongest one I've ever had and it was gross. I could only force myself to drink half of it and that was enough to make me unable to drive. Two others at the table tried it and agreed it was was too strong. The waitress told my wife the sangria was good and came with fruit. It came with no fruit and no ice and wasn't very good. My wife and i both ordered burritos and they were not good at all. Peas and onions were mixed into the meat - gross! I was not impressed with the burrito at all. We were also charged $3.50 for a 1/2 side of guacamole we never received. We were never offered a refill on our water and all of us had empty glasses. At two points during the meal an employee (different one each time) brought somebody else's credit card to our table as if it were ours.

I have been really happy with our service and food here. They gave us the wrong order once, but it happens and they gave us the next order on the house...so they were very fair. The best dish I have had (and a norm for our take out) is the Ranchero Burrito - it has a combination of meats with steak, chicken and chorizo....good stuff. The sauce we actually have left off on the side....we like it best with their fresh guacamole & pico de gallo. For Mexican food in GR...it is a good choice..especially if you are by Knapp's corner. We have only eaten there a couple of times - most of the time we just order to go. Hope you enjoy!

The menu is exhausting and they even have several dishes that are more traditional and authentic. Yes, thankfully this place is a couple notches more authentic than your typical U.S. Mexican restaurant (especially in Michigan). Overall, the food is pretty good and should satisfy a Mexican food craving. The service is usually pretty quick. My favorite part of this place is the salsa. It tastes a bit different each time, so you know it's handmade. It may have a bit more liquid than some junk you get out of a jar, but the fresh cilantro makes it really addicting.

My husband and I are frequent diners at El Burrito. I usually prefer it over any of the other mexican restaurants in Grand Rapids. Our experience earlier this week was a bit unsettling. We asked for the cheese dip with jalapenos. Our waiter wasn't fluent in english, so he brought a colleague over to help, she said she understood what we were asking for but really she didn't either. I suppose grinding a few jalapenos and mixing it into the cheese dip was quiet an ordeal in the kitchen, because what they came out with was the most horrifying thing I'd ever seen. I didn't say anything or complain at that point because I felt it wasn't going to help the situation. Instead, I asked to speak to the manager and offered up what I thought was a decent suggestion. My suggestion was for them to simply mince up some jalapenos and offer them up on the side for those who like a spicier dip. The manager was not fluent in english so he had no idea what I was saying and he didn't understand that it was a suggestion, instead he got defensive. That was a bust as well. The other part of that evening that was disappointing was the service. Our server only had two tables, and he came by maybe once and then disappeared. It was just an odd experience for us.

It was not bad. The chips are good, salsa is a bit watery. The pico with my burito was great; decent heat with good flavor. I had the steak fajita burito. It was a bit on the bland side. Not carboard mind you, but not as flavorful as I was expecting. Prices were higher than I was expecting for a strip mall joint. It's not outrageous, but equal or better mexican can be had elsewhere for less. Service was...eh, OK. Overall it's not a bad place, but it's nothing special. In a few weeks or months I probably won't remember that I'd been there....

It is a great place to take the whole family or to just hang out with a few friends to have a fantastic meal.Good chips and salsa, great margaritas and the food is served hot from the kitchen and the best refried beans!! My only complaint is sometimes the servers are not that friendly. We like it so much we try to go at least once a month or so.Just wish they would open one in Cascade.

Quality Forsaken I just ordered the "Speedy Gonzales" to go, got it to my office and was bummed. The cheese they are using is not real cheese. It's that white, plastic-like goo that sticks to your teeth and has very little flavor. If this is authentic, I'm afraid I'll go with "tex-mex." I'm also a salsa freak. Theirs, while homemade, tastes like canned, salted tomatoes blended with a bit of cilantro and onion. Flavorless, but salty. ;-( You lost me at the cheese though. Come on guys - you can do better than this!

    (2)
  • Alan K.

This would be a decent Mexican restaurant if it weren't for the cheap, processed cheese they use in all of their dishes. It's a mix between white Velveeta and the cheese they put on Nachos at the ballpark. It has a funny aftertaste and leaves a coating on the roof of your mouth. From a presentation standpoint, it runs out of whatever they put it in like Enchiladas or Chile Rellenos because it is so thin, so your dishes are floating in a sea of near liquid cheese that has a thin film on top like when soup sits in a kettle for too long. Very disappointing. On a positive note, the chips were warm and the salsa was fresh, albeit a bit on the bland side. There are definitely better choices in the area for Mexican, but this could be a solid place if they'd use a better quality cheese, which is so important to any Mexican dish.

I have some friends who are huge fans of this place & we ordered some take out for dinner. I decided to try the ---- burrito & asked that cheese be added to it Unfortunately the person taking the phone order thought that meant I wanted the queso sauce on my burrito. Now don't get me wrong, that white cheese is tasty, but way to rich to be covering a burrito for me. My burrito also had a ton of green pepper in it and the beef had very good flavor. I can't wait to go back and try more!
